“Instead of holding onto the belief that exercise needs to suck, I’m able to tune in and notice what feels good and what doesn’t. When it doesn’t feel good, I know that I don’t have to push through it anymore!”
- Happy Client, Noreen
I’ve always believed that exercise isn’t one size fits all.

One Step At A Time
I’ve always loved to help others, but I didn’t always understand the important role exercise plays in supporting wellbeing. In university, my eyes were opened when I volunteered for programs which utilized exercise as a tool to help those with disabilities and chronic disease. It was so exciting when people would share how their exercise routine had helped them get out of the car without help or reduced their pain so they could enjoy time with their family again. Whether the participant was a stroke or cancer survivor, or an individual with cerebral palsy, exercise always had a place in their self care routine. It was amazing to see how consistent and small steps towards being more active can help people live well and feel amazing!

After I graduated from the University of Calgary, I got my first job working in a gym. If my job taught me anything, it’s that everyone has a different definition of what healthy means, and everyone has different exercise preferences. I started on my own journey of figuring out my identity as a personal trainer. Along the way, I found myself lost in a world of dieting, intense exercise regimes and constant self-doubt.
Today, I approach exercise from the understanding that less is often more. I strength train twice a week so I can mange knee pain and chronic migraines, and my cardio consists of walking my dogs around my neighborhood in Calgary. Life has its seasons, and I’m sure my goals and interests will change over time; just like yours will.
The beautiful thing about using exercise for self care is that your plan will be unique to you.
There’s no need to compare what you are doing to what others are doing. The “best” exercise plan for you is one that’s achievable and improves your wellbeing.
Exercise should fit into your life, not the other way around.
If I could give my younger self some sage advice, I’d tell her to be kind to herself and practice staying curious. And that’s the same advice I’m giving to you.
Stay curious,
Johnena, The Self Care Trainer
